That was what the great epic electro-pop duo Empire of the Sun told BBC in a radio interview. They also said that they were superheroes, and I could agree on that one. They have been smokin’ hot on my playlist for quite a while now, since early autumn until now. I wasn’t wrong about these guys that they had something special going on. Now they are played on clubs here in Sweden but it took a while for them to make it here. In Australia where they are from, their excellent tune “Walking on a Dream” made the charts quite fast after the release in late August. Fully understandable! Check out their ambitious and theatrical video filmed in Shanghai, China, for that song.
Empire of the Sun consists of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore. Both with other music projects as well. Steele has the indie-pop band The Sleepy Jackson and Littlemore is active in another superb electric duo Pnau, who are mentioned here at Tracasseur before. More on Pnau will come further on, check out their MySpace until then.
Steele and Littlemore say that they are on a mission, an epic journey to seek out ancient cultures across the globe, searching for inner enlightenment while creating a musical dynasty that will last forever. I think they are on to something. They also dress like they were in an oriental science-fiction movie.
The name of the duo is taken from a JG Ballard novel from 1984, later adapted by Steven Spielberg to the movie screens starring a young Christian Bale. Great film by the way look at the trailer here.
