Fine new acquaintance: Beaumont

This is a really nice new acquaintance for me, Beaumont from Sydney, Australia. Once again these Australians make great electronic music.

He has not yet been hyped on all the blogs around the world, but that is soon to come because this sounds quite amazing! The touch from the eighties synth sound in a modern way catches your ears when you hear Beaumont’s instrumental electro. His own material is kind of dreamy and his remixes provides the original with an extra flavour. My favourites from Beaumont are “Last Night”, “Memoir” and the remixes of Ladyhawke and Empire Of The Sun.

Enough talking, hear this guy out and follow his near future at his MySpace.

The russet-red one…

…is what the gifted English girl Eleanor Jackson calls her exciting project, but in French then; La Roux. And it’s good, really good. She released her first single “Quicksand” last year on the French label Kitsuné. Great tune, check out the video directed of Kinga Burza (Kate Perry, The Teenagers, The Thrills, Ladyhawke):

The English newspaper The Guardian tells us that we should keep an eye on La Roux during 2009. And I can ensure you that we will, not to should be pure stupidity. The second single “In For The Kill” will be released March 16th on the record label Polydor. They are also set to release the debut album in 2009. Can hardly wait…

There are a lot of remixes made of these two songs that I have mentioned, not all of them great, but we give you them all anyway. So then it’s up to you to decide which one you like the most. My favourite remix is the Joe and Will Ask? remix that was featured on “Tracasseur Mixtape February 2009”.

Exclusive Interview: DW

Tracasseur consider the Swedish electronic duo DW as a very promising and talented act. Therefore we opted to have an interview with these lads before their next gig here in Stockholm. They are playing at “Restaurant Landet” this Tuesday, March 3rd at 10 PM. Don’t miss them out!

Hello Amir and Kilian, how is it with the star quality?
(Amir) We beam with pleasure!

We know that you guys had have other projects together before. How long have you been working with DW?
(Amir) DW was born in 2003 when our sound moved closer towards dance music. The music changed, our parts in DW also became clearer when only Kilian and me were the one’s who continued. It was D as in Kilian and W as in Amir…

Haha, but we know that the name DW was a compromise between you two, tell us a little about that?
(Kilian) The name DW is shortening of Darkwoods, the name we had before. Darkwoods feels a little more visual than DW, more associations, which could both be good and bad. The thing that wasn’t good with Darkwoods was the dark vibes it gives away. Sounds more like a heavy metal band; there are surely lots of bands in that genre that goes by the name of Darkwoods.
(Amir) DW sounds more German. More synth. More electro. Maybe not that much italo though…
(Kilian) Furthermore we didn’t want to be connected with the evil Earl de Darkwood in the Japanese animated film “Interstella 5555” for Daft Punk.
(Amir) The fight against Mr. Darkwood is actually a kind of general theme for us in the lyrics.
How should you describe your music and your sound?
(Amir & Kilian) The description at our MySpace is kind of significant. “Hip-pop-house through pink italo shades".
(Amir) Often I describe our music as dance-friendly electronic pop with influences from everywhere…
(Kilian interrupts) I MUST say that I believe it is the listener who creates the genre, what you carry with you, what you listen to and what you’ve listened to before. There is a quote, which goes something like this: “The beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. In our case maybe ear suites better than eye.
(Amir) Nevertheless our music is also much about the visual, so I agree. On the quote will say…
(Kilian) “The ear is in the eye of the beholder” haha…

Last autumn you had your first live gig here in Stockholm. How did it work out?
(Kilian) It went beyond our expectations, much thanks to that the place had a club organizer and sound technician that understood electronic music.
(Amir) That same guy has helped us out before by mastering some tunes. A cool guy!
(Kilian) It was a kick standing on stage even if we were quite nervous.
(Amir) There were two cool italo lovers, who screamed out “Italodisco!!!” and danced more than what they’ve done since Rimini in the early eighties. One of the guys got to borrow the vocoder after the gig and refused to let go of the microphone. He was like: “How do you work this thing?” “Cool!” “Real cool dude!”
(Kilian) Wasn’t it Den Harrow from 2008?
(Amir) Don’t think it was from 1985 anyhow.
(Kilian) Great song!
(Amir) Mmm…
Then you also have been performing live at Picknick in Berlin in connection with their fashion week. How was it to be on stage abroad?
(Kilian) It was fun! Fantastic city! We had a blast and got to travel together.
(Amir) Absolutely! Fun to travel with “The Rat” aka known as “Snart Jonas”
(Kilian) We’ve been talking about letting him become the third member of DW.
(Amir) DW number 3. Future brain…
(Kilian) The gig went well except that there were some troubles with the technique. It was an awesome feeling to see people sing along with our songs. Berlin knows music!
(Amir) One more drink?
(Kilian) Could be too relaxed then maybe?

You mentioned “Snart Jonas” as a possible third member of DW in the future. But he has already been singing in several of your songs. How does the collaboration look today?
(Amir) Jonas is today in a band called Snart with another musician named Gabriel. I have been to high school with these two. They’re real good musicians and we wanted to give our songs that little extra with help from the amazing voice of Jonas. And as we mentioned before, Jonas performs with us live. It’s very comfortable to have Jonas with us live; he has a lot of experience to be on stage.
(Kilian) We look forward to Snart’s version of “Hypnotic Tango”.

The rumours say that you Amir sings on the other tracks, is that true?
(Amir) I grab hold of the microphone and refuses to let it go. It was actually Kilian who started doing the vocoder stuff but then it changed to me. Don’t know why really but now it’s a part of our sound. Kilian is also doing another project where you can hear him and the vocoder - Tropical Silence. Fedt!
(Kilian) Amir finds the exact right feeling with his voice to our songs.
You have also been signed by the Chicago based indie label Glam Boy. How did that become reality and what are the plans for you at Glam Boy?
(Kilian) We were contacted via MySpace and they offered exactly what we were looking for in a label. Glam Boy was founded by a true italo disco and new wave enthusiast and seems to have the right visions for his artists.
(Amir) We believe it will work out fine. We don’t know that much yet. We’ve been in contact with numerous MySpace-labels before Glam Boy and there is a lot of talking. Starting a MySpace page is not quite the same as running a record label.
(Kilian) Another thing with Glam Boy is their seriousity. They have a record store and arrange great clubs in Chicago. Chicago is also an interesting city much because to their music heritage.
(Amir) We have already been talking about a mini tour on the American east coast. That would be real cool as a fourth gig!
(Kilian) Our third gig is at “Restaurant Landet” now on Tuesday, March 3rd. Join us!

You have made a number of real good remixes, for example one of the Swedish italo band Fake’s songs, that we have posted before. How do you choose which songs you will make a remix of?
(Amir) We do remixes of songs that we want to hear out ourselves.
(Kilian) And songs that we want others to hear out, with or without the DW touch.
(Amir) We do two kinds of remixes. Partly remixes of old tunes that too few people have heard and partly songs that the other artist want to get DW-fied.
(Kilian) When you hear a song that you gladly listen to a hundred times, it is hard not to take action. You might as well be creative with that song when you are going to spend time with it.

What are the closest future plans for DW? Take over the world?
(Amir) Hmm…we got to take more action to get more gigs and collaborations. We’ve been spoiled with a lot of things so far. But the world lies before our feet.
(Kilian) Focus lies within to create awesome live gigs and take a step away from the anonymity after many years of producing at home. Now we feel that we can take credit for the music we make and we have no problems to show who we are.
(Amir) An EP would also be the real deal. And with Glam Boy on our team that could be reality in a near future, hopefully during 2009.

Tracasseur says thank you for the exclusive interview and we promise you that we will keep our eyes and ears on you. Good luck!
(Amir & Kilian) Thanks for a nice chat!

Ted & Francis, we like woah!

Once again an electronic duo, and once again from Australia. There is so much great music coming from that continent right now.
Their name is Ted & Francis but they also have another project named Like Woah! Both acts are awesome! This post is going to be about the Ted & Francis project though.
In real life their names are Rhys and David and they are in their early 20’s. They call their music Tropical Pop. And the music carries you away; it’s dreamy synth-pop with catchy beats. Hard not to beat time with one’s foot. They have also done a couple of great remixes, the latest one are a remix of Sébastien Tellier's ”Kilometer”.
The French record label Kitsuné has signed them for a record deal and their debut EP is going to be released in April. Good job by the Frenchmen to pick these guys up. Maybe it’s time for Ted & Francis to hit it off during 2009? We believe so! The song “Erlend” is a real beauty…

Ted & Francis – Erlend

Ted & Francis – I Wish I Was a Polar Bear

Ted & Francis – Heart Shake

Ted & Francis – All Ways

Empire of the Sun – We Are The People (Ted & Francis Remix)

A great new acquaintance

One of our first friends at Tracasseur’s MySpace was for us an unknown band from Portland, Oregon. The first thing that first popped my mind was that Matt Groening, the creator of Simpsons, is from Portland. But now there is one more big thing from that city and that’s the electronic synth pop duo Mackintosh Braun. Quite a pleasant get-together I would say. I’ve been playing their album “The Sound” almost on repeat since the introduction.

Their sound is if M83, Junior Boys, Kraftwerk and Cut Copy were incorporated. And that is not a bad incorporation. A dreamful and romantic feeling with a nice discrete and pumping beat with gentle vocals. It was love at once!

And there are other people who have understand Mackintosh Braun’s greatness. For example they were chosen as on of the top 25 bands of 2008 by indiemusic.com. The song “Wake Up” is going to be in the NBC show “Chuck” this Monday. And for you who are going to miss “Chuck” on Monday we give you a video instead.

When I asked them if they have been to Sweden, the answer was no, but that they would love to come here soon. So now it’s up for us Swedes to get them here, so fall in love with them!

New Fear of Tigers!

One of my absolute favourite producers of the past year has been Fear of Tigers. Mr Tigers is music journalist Ben Berry from Greenwich, London. Born in Kobe, Japan he grew up in the far east. After moving back to England in his teens, he moved to Tenerife, Spain to work as a DJ when he was 20. This period of time also resulted in a few house records he labels 'rubbish' (I don't believe it). Growing tired of DJing every night, he hasn't done it for five years now. Ben also seems to have a soft spot for Sweden and Scandinavia; he is even learning swedish.

So, does any of this reflect in his music? Well, it's obvious that he knows music. His productions have a wide range, from the slow electrotrashy funk of the remix of Mariah Carey's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", to the lovely indie electro of the remix of Pnau's "With you forever", my favourite track of the last year, to his latest track, "Sirkka", an almost trancey synth house banger, and his most club-oriented track yet. Everything is really well produced and share a distinct sound though, with lots of great breaks and build-ups.

It would be impossible to single out a favourite track, but I have to admit that I have soft spots for the Pnau, Anoraak and Does it Offend You, Yeah? remixes along with "The Adventures of Pippi Longstrump" and the brand new (got it yesterday night) "Sirkka". And who knows, perhaps a Scandinavian tour beckons?

Fear of Tigers - Sirkka

Fear of Tigers - Layers

Fear of Tigers - Sex with Robots

Fear of Tigers - Study Hard Drugs School

Fear of Tigers - The Adventures of Pippi Longstrump

Fear of Tigers - The Rich Cry Too

Anoraak - Nightdrive With You (Fear of Tigers Remix)

Aeroplane

Aeroplane is a Belgium based Dj/Producer duo consisting of Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca. Their music is a mix of psychedelic guitars, pop keys, melancholic waves, disco beats and catchy basslines. They released their first 12" in 2007, "Caramellas/Aeroplane", on Eskimo Recordings.
They immediately got positive reactions from the biggest DJ's and producers around because of their fresh and different sound.

Due to the success of their 12"'s, they've been asked to do a lot of remixes in 2007 & 2008 , for artist like Cobra Dukes, Das Pop, Lindström, Cut Copy, Grace Jones, MGMT, Bloc Party, Friendly Fires, etc…

Aeroplane will go into the studio in February /March of 2009 to record there already anticipated album.

This is our vacuum mix #1. Pretty much all they have done since august 2007.
